Hybrid airsoft guns originally debuted in the middle of 2006, although they have not become very popular since. This new type of airsoft gun functions differently from gas, electric, and spring airsoft guns (although it is powered electrically). In fact, it works almost exactly like a real gun. BBs are placed in the front of real-like shells, and red caps placed in the back. The shells are inserted into the magazine, and the magazine can be loaded regularly. After pulling the trigger, the firing pin in the gun hits the red cap on the back of the shell, which explodes and creates a high pressure inside the casing. This pressure pushes the BB out through the barrel at a velocity which is unachievable by the other three types of airsoft guns.

Real guns operate very similarly, in that the firing pin strikes the primer, creates a spark, and ignites the gunpowder. The burning of the gunpowder creates gas and pressure inside the shell, which pushes the bullet out. The differences between the real gun way and the airsoft gun way is that only a tiny amount of gunpowder is used in the red caps for airsoft (while a lot is used in real shells), and the pressure created in an actual gun is much higher than in an airsoft gun (also, there is the key difference of the projectile being metal instead of plastic).

With a hybrid gun, you obviously need to be much more conservative with your shooting, or if you feel the need to fire a great deal, you must take a lot of time to prepare more rounds. That is the clear negative of hybrid guns; the need to prepare each round (or you could probably buy rounds pre-assembled, but they will of course be more expensive than regular BBs). However, there are positives. For one, many players will be attracted because of the stunning realism, as now not only does the gun look real, but so does the ammunition. As stated, because of the nature of the ammo, the velocity achieved is very high. This is great for snipers, who now can shoot from much further back (higher speed = more distance). In fact, hybrid guns would be good for many single shot airsoft models, although using one in a semi-automatic or fully automatic model would result in paying a lot of money or using a lot of time for the ammunition.

With the introduction of hybrid guns, one wonders how realistic airsoft guns can get. Some airsoft guns look completely real (save for the orange tip), and now even the ammo and some internal mechanisms are functioning realistically. Due to the military’s growing use of airsoft guns, researchers are developing airsoft advancements faster. It seems the hybrid airsoft gun is just a glimpse of what new glories airsoft holds for us.

If you are looking at an airsoft M4 (regardless of brand) as your first airsoft gun it comes with no surprise because the M16 and M4 are the standard issued weapon for the U.S. Military and is also in use by 15 other NATO countries. It is also the most mass produced rifle in its caliber, that by itself has to tell you something.

As a beginner, buying your first airsoft gun is probably the most crucial part to getting started into airsoft. An important step to buying your first airsoft m4 airsoft gun is establishing what price range you can afford.

The great part about starting out with an airsoft M4 rifle is that it will give you lots of versatility when it comes to playing your airsoft games. For instance, if everyone was to decide to play a close quarter combat game your airsoft M4 rifle would be able to do just fine, thanks to the collapsible stock and already relatively short rifle, add a red dot scope and you’ll probably have one of the best choice weapons for the scenario! If you were to play a game in the forest and decided to play the role of a sniper with your airsoft m4, this could also be done by raising the hop up, using heavier airsoft bbs and using a magnified scope. One could also buy an airsoft M16 as opposed to an M4 airsoft gun if they will be doing more long range shooting, this will give the player a couple additional inches on the barrel for better accuracy .

If the U.S. Military using the M16 and M4 as their standard weapon is not enough reason to sway you to get an airsoft M4 as your first gun, the huge amount of modifications and customization that can be done to these airsoft guns should be the reason. This is one important reason why you still want to go with a good well reviewed airsoft gun even if you cannot afford to buy a $300+ airsoft rifle and have to settle for a mid grade $125+ model. Doing so will give you the ability to upgrade your airsoft M4 rifle in the future, once you have more cash saved up.

The airsoft M4 is a great rifle to get started out with. It is relatively light weight, versatile, and capable of shooting far distances but also makes a great weapon for close quarter games. Obviously this will all depend on which brand & model you end up going with. It is always important to make sure you are buying an electric airsoft gun (a.k.a. airsoft aeg gun ), many beginner’s will make the mistake of buying an airsoft m4 or any rifle for that matter powered by spring because of the noticeable price difference, thinking the airsoft gun will be capable of firing semi or fully automatic.

Did you know that you can also get paintballs that will fit in an airsoft gun? Manufacturers do make a 6MM paintball, which would allow the typical caliber airsoft pistol or rifle to deliver that classic splat when shooting an opponent. Using an this type of gun instead of a traditional paintball gun is significant because of the distinct realism that it provides. Here is a quick run down of why:

The airsoft gun itself is much more realistic looking than a paintball gun.

This makes for a much more life like situation when drilling or testing for military or police action. With standard plastic BBs, it is harder to know if you have the hit the opponent, but the paint splatter of a paintball is sure to show on the opponent.

Carrying the ammunition can be done with clips, just like real life.

Many times in paintballing, the ammunition is stored in a large container just above the gun, and can alter the way a real gun would feel in your hands. With airsoft, you can load clips with the paintball rounds and deliver the same action as a real life crisis situation. No bulky reloads to mess with.

Using airsoft carries less weight.

When running, jumping, crawling or diving for cover, the less weight, the more agile you can be. This increases the realism of the game and allows the operator greater ability to train for escape moves and tactics.

All in all, this method gives you an unprecedented advantage over traditional paintballing.

Justin Kander asked:

These days people are not as connected with each other, especially within their neighborhoods. Old neighborhood sports such as football, basketball, and baseball still thrive in some areas, but they are certainly not as popular as they once were. However, airsoft may be the key to reuniting the communities of America. It is easy to get into, quick to start, and very exciting. Spring and electric pistols are cheap, and if one person does not have a gun they can easily borrow or rent one. Plus, it is easy to convince people to play airsoft because it is clearly fun, so you won’t have a problem finding people to play with. Initially, if/when you are looking for people to play, you should definitely have two or three extra guns, which would sensibly be cheap spring pistols. With those, you do not need to think twice about lending them out, and it takes them awhile to exhaust even a dollar’s worth of BBs.

Depending on where you live, finding where to play can either be in walking distance or a short drive away. Forests are the best because you basically have the whole place to yourselves and the terrain is great. Make sure the forests are on public property and that you go in pretty deep so your presence is unknown to other people. Many airsoft guns are relatively quiet so if you are far enough into the forest nobody will hear you (although people hearing the sounds of airsoft will usually know it is airsoft or, more likely, think it is paintball). If you have doubts about your location, you can call your local police station and ask if where you are playing is alright, and it is generally good to tell the police you are playing anyway (make sure to call the station, not 911).

The great thing about airsoft is there are extended possibilities beyond occasional, recreational play. It is possible that many players will become more engrossed and interested in the game, and when the time comes an official team can be made that can enter into tournaments. What started as a sporadically played activity can become something much more.

Unlike most sports, airsoft is not defined by number of players. Airsoft can be played one on one, or ten on ten. Even if there is an odd number of people, things can still be relatively even; for example, with a two on three game, one member of the two person team could have an electric gun (or just a better gun than the players on the other team). Since it does not take many people to play, games can start off small, and once other people start seeing how fun it is, they will want to join. Also, airsoft never gets old. Each game is always different, especially if you switch between terrains and/or guns. As more and more people join, games will get more complex and tactical, further adding to the dissimilarity between games.

There is more than one type of airsoft BB gun. Generally, most airsoft BB guns can be thought of as replicas: they are like “toy” counterparts of “real” firearms. The main types of of these guns are spring powered guns, electric airsoft guns, and gas powered guns.

Spring powered airsoft BB guns:

When you use one of these guns, you must manually cock it. When you cock it, a spring is compressed inside the piston, making an airtight seal when released. When the trigger is pulled, the piston is released, and a high pressure area is created behind the BB which projects it down the barrel and out toward the target. Spring powered airsoft BB guns must be cocked before every shot. They are generally less expensive than other airsoft replicas.

Electric airsoft BB guns:

These are the type of gun that you will most commonly see used in the sport. Unlike spring powered airsoft BB guns, the cocking action is automated in an electric airsoft BB gun. Generally, one of these guns will be powered by a rechargeable battery pack.

Gas powered airsoft BB guns:

To propel the BB, gas powered airsoft BB guns use… well… gas. Pressureized gas, stored in a liquid form in a chamber is released into the firing chamber where it expands a great deal in volume and propels the BB. A blowback gun is generally more expenive than a non-blowback one (a blowback airsoft BB gun is one in which the gas essentially blows back, after propelling the BB, to cycle the internal mechanism, resetting it for the next shot.) People like the blowback slide action on the gun, because this makes an airsoft pistol seem even more realistic.

Airsoft BB guns have become very popular since the days when they were very first introduced. This is because they are seen as a much safer, yet still accurate, counterpart to regular BB guns. Airsoft BB guns are even used in a sport similar to paintball, in which the BBs are shot at people!

The airsoft BBs are not made of metal like regular BBs. Rather, they are made of soft plastic that comes in many different colors. You should not try to reuse airsoft BBs (this is both dangerous, and it will degrade your gun.)

When buying airsoft BBs, look for biodegradeable ones. They will decompose in less than a year whereas traditional airsoft BBs can take around 5 years to decompose.

Airsoft BBs come in various weights. The lighter the BB, the further it will travel, but the less accurate it will be. The reverse is true of higher weight BBs. Therefore, most people tend to use airsoft BBs that are of .20 or .25 gram weights. These are a great combination of both accuracy and range.
