Coin magic is the art of performing magic tricks with normal everyday coins and change that people carry around. The benefits of learning some coin magic are that you can be ready to show your magical abilities in almost any situation, you don’t need to carry around magic props or equipment. Also, people have a fundamental interest in money, so magic tricks involving coins or money are always a hit.
Some classic examples of coin magic are the ‘vanishing coin’ trick – where a coin is made to seem to vanish before people’s eyes, or the ‘coin through table’ trick, where a coin is slapped down on a table, and then appears to pass through the table itself. There are many more examples than this though – e.g. making a marked coin appear in a randomly selected object, such as an egg or loaf of bread. All these effects are possible once you learn the basic principles of coin magic.
A key ingredient of many coin magic tricks is some sleight of hand ability, you will need to learn different moves, such as ‘palming’ a coin. These will take a fair amount of practice to have them so that they really look natural. Practicing in front of a mirror can be a great help here. Since the greatest challenge when learning moves such as ‘palming’ is to have it appear that there is no coin in your hand when in reality there is, one tip is to practice performing normal everyday activities, such as writing, while holding a coin in the required hidden position. This can help you achieve the required ‘natural’ look.
Your time spent practicing these moves with coins though, will be well worth it when you come to perform your trick to people. The effect can be quite stunning. It’s good to learn a few coin tricks to perform in quick succession, that way you won’t risk having people make you perform the same trick again and again, and find out how you’re doing it.
